On Saturday 17th October 2026, the Trinity Centre in Llandudno filled with music, colour, conversation and pride. The North Wales Africa Society (NWAS) hosted its Black History Week 2026 celebration, and more than 100 people joined us for the day. We are still smiling.
A day of celebration, reflection and connection
This year's theme, Honouring Our Communities, guided everything we did. From 1pm to 8pm, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to recognise the contributions, resilience and achievements of Black communities, past, present and future. Seeing more than 100 guests fill the hall was a real celebration of what this community can do together.
Our four aims shaped the day:
• Celebrate our people
• Reflect on our history
• Connect our communities
• Inspire future generations
Special guests
We were honoured that the Mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Mrs Mandy Hawkins, accepted our invitation, accompanied by her Consort, Cllr David Hawkins. Having civic leaders alongside our community was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together.
Opening remarks and awards
The official opening remarks were given by our Director, Cllr Samuel Njoku, who welcomed guests and set the tone for the day. Later in the programme, the awards were presented by the Mayor, recognising members of our community in a moment of real pride for everyone in the room.
Music, performance and good food
The afternoon opened with a warm welcome, registration and background music, followed by the official opening. Live music and performances came from Felix Ngindu, who travelled all the way from Liverpool to share music, culture and unity. DJ Big Tee kept the energy high with music that got the whole room moving.
Between performances, we paused for speeches, community reflections and recognition, then shared food and refreshments, with plenty of time for networking and photos. The day closed with music, dancing and thanks.
